Stop the Pulling: 7 Days to Loose Leash Walking

A dog that pulls on the leash turns every walk into a tug-of-war. With the right technique, most dogs can learn loose leash walking in about a week.

Why Dogs Pull

Dogs pull because it works. Pulling gets them closer to interesting smells and exciting sights. Every time pulling achieves the goal, the behavior is reinforced.

The Be a Tree Method

When your dog pulls, immediately stop walking and stand still. Wait for your dog to release tension on the leash. The moment the leash is slack, resume walking. This teaches that pulling means going nowhere.

7-Day Training Plan

  1. Day 1-2: Practice indoors, treat every 3 steps of loose leash walking
  2. Day 3-4: Move to a quiet street, treat every 5 steps
  3. Day 5-6: Slightly busier area, treat every 10 steps
  4. Day 7: Normal walk environment, reduce treat frequency gradually

Key insight: Loose leash walking is a skill that must be taught, not a behavior dogs naturally possess.
