Your puppy first night home guide: preparation, comforting tips, and handling crying so both of you get rest.
The First Night Matters
The first night in a new home sets the tone for your relationship with your puppy. They've just been separated from their mother and littermates, and everything is unfamiliar. Your calm approach makes all the difference.
Prepare Before Pickup
Set up a cosy sleeping area near where you sleep — not in a distant room. A warm (not hot) heat pack wrapped in a towel mimics the warmth of littermates. Have a ticking clock or white noise app ready for comfort.
Evening Routine
Keep the first evening calm. Avoid parties, visitors, or introducing the puppy to every room. Let them explore gradually. Offer a small meal about 3 hours before bedtime, then no food or water 1 hour before sleep.
Handling Night-Time Crying
Your puppy will likely cry. Taking them out for a toilet break (no play, just business) then returning them to bed is the right response. Avoid turning crying into a game — picking them up every time teaches them that crying works.
The Toilet Schedule
Puppies under 12 weeks need a toilet break every 2-3 hours, including at least once during the night. Set an alarm. Accidents will happen, and that's normal — never punish a puppy for not holding it.
