How to Teach Sit & Stay: Step-by-Step Dog Training

Why Sit and Stay Matter
The sit and stay commands are the foundation of all dog training. They teach impulse control, build trust, and keep your dog safe in potentially dangerous situations.
Step 1: Teaching Sit
Hold a treat close to your dog's nose. Slowly move your hand up and back over their head. As their nose follows the treat, their bottom will naturally lower. The moment they sit, say "yes!" and give the treat.
Step 2: Adding the Cue
Once your dog reliably follows the lure, start saying "sit" just before you move your hand. Practice this 5-10 times per session.
Step 3: Teaching Stay
Ask your dog to sit. Hold your palm out like a stop sign and say "stay." Take one step back. If they hold position for even a second, return and reward. Gradually increase distance and duration.
Common Mistakes
- Moving too fast — build duration slowly
- Repeating the cue — say it once clearly
- Training when distracted — start in a quiet room
