Teach Leave It Command: Step-by-Step Guide
The leave it command can save your dogs life. Learn how to train this essential safety skill in 5 simple steps.
Why Leave It Is Essential
The leave it command teaches your dog to ignore or move away from something tempting or potentially dangerous. It can prevent your dog from eating toxic substances, chasing traffic, or approaching aggressive animals.
Step 1: Start with a Closed Fist
Hold a treat in your closed fist and present it to your dog. They will sniff, lick, and paw at your hand. Wait. The moment they pull their nose away even slightly, say yes and give them a treat from your other hand.
Step 2: Add the Cue
Once your dog consistently pulls away from your closed fist, add the verbal cue leave it just before presenting your hand. Practice until they reliably back away from the closed fist upon hearing the cue.
Step 3: Open Hand Progression
Place the treat on your open palm. If your dog goes for it, close your hand. When they stop trying, open again. Reward from the other hand when they show restraint.
Step 4: Floor Placement
Place a treat on the floor and cover it with your hand. Say leave it. Remove your hand when they look at you instead of the treat. Gradually increase difficulty.
Step 5: Real-World Practice
Practice with increasingly tempting items: dropped food on walks, other dogs toys, and eventually moving distractions. Always reward compliance with high-value treats.
