Puppy Feeding Guide: Schedule, Portions & Nutrition
Feeding your puppy right sets the foundation for a healthy adult dog. Learn schedules, portions, and nutrition tips.
Puppy Feeding: The Complete Guide
Proper nutrition during puppyhood shapes your dog's skeletal development, immune system, and lifelong health. Here's what every new puppy owner needs to know about feeding.
Feeding Schedule by Age
- 6-12 weeks: 4 meals per day — puppy stomachs are tiny and need frequent fuel
- 3-6 months: 3 meals per day — transition to a more predictable schedule
- 6-12 months: 2 meals per day — most breeds do well with morning and evening meals
- 12+ months: 1-2 meals per day — small breeds may still need twice-daily feeding
Choosing the Right Food
Select food labeled "complete and balanced" for puppies by AAFCO (or your country's equivalent). Large-breed puppies need formulas with controlled calcium and phosphorus to prevent growth disorders. Small breeds benefit from smaller kibble sizes and calorie-dense formulas.
Portion Control
Follow the feeding guide on your puppy food package as a starting point, then adjust based on body condition. You should be able to feel (but not see) your puppy's ribs. Overfeeding is the #1 cause of developmental orthopedic diseases in growing dogs.
Foods to Avoid
Never feed puppies chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol (artificial sweetener), or raw dough. Avoid adult dog food — it lacks the higher protein and fat levels puppies need for growth.
Transitioning Foods
When changing food, do it gradually over 7-10 days: mix 25% new food on days 1-2, 50% on days 3-5, 75% on days 6-8, then 100% new food by day 10. Sudden changes cause digestive upset.
