Road Tripping With Your Dog: 7 Essential Tips

A road trip with your dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences you share. With proper preparation, it can also be safe and stress-free.

1. Practice Car Rides First

Before the big trip, take your dog on progressively longer car rides. Start with 10-minute drives around the neighborhood, building up to an hour or more. This helps prevent motion sickness and anxiety on travel day.

2. Use a Proper Restraint

Never let your dog ride loose in the front seat. Options include a crash-tested crate secured with seatbelt straps, a dog seatbelt harness that clips into the buckle, or a vehicle-specific dog barrier for SUVs. An unrestrained 60-pound dog becomes a 2,700-pound projectile in a 35 mph crash.

3. Pack a Dog Travel Kit

Include food, bowls, medications, veterinary records, a first-aid kit, poop bags, familiar toys, and a recent photo of your dog in case they get lost. Don't forget a blanket that smells like home.

4. Plan Regular Stops

Stop every 2-3 hours for exercise, hydration, and bathroom breaks. Research dog-friendly rest areas and parks along your route in advance.

5. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with windows cracked, car temperatures can reach dangerous levels within minutes. On a 22°C day, the inside of a car can reach 38°C in 30 minutes.

6. Keep Your Dog's Routine

Feed at the same times, maintain walking schedules, and bring their regular bed and toys. Familiarity reduces travel stress.

7. Research Pet Policies in Advance

Not all hotels, restaurants, or attractions accept pets. Call ahead and confirm policies, fees, and any weight restrictions before booking.
