Reading Dog Body Language: Stress Signs

Understanding Canine Communication

Dogs communicate primarily through body language. Learning to read these signals prevents misunderstandings and keeps both you and your dog safe.

Signs of a Relaxed Dog

  • Loose, wiggly body posture
  • Soft, squinty eyes with relaxed ears
  • Open mouth with tongue lolling
  • Gentle, sweeping tail wag

Stress and Anxiety Indicators

Whale eye (showing whites of eyes), lip licking, yawning, and turned-away head all signal discomfort. A tucked tail, flattened ears, and crouched posture indicate fear. Address the stressor immediately.

Warning Signs of Aggression

Stiff body, fixed stare, raised hackles, and growling are escalation signals. Never punish a growling dog -- the growl is a warning. Remove the trigger and create space.

Context Matters

The same gesture can mean different things depending on context. A wagging tail doesn't always mean happy -- a high, stiff wag can signal arousal or agitation. Read the whole body, not just one signal.
