Reading Dog Body Language: Tail and Ears

What Your Dog Is Telling You

Dogs communicate primarily through body language. Learning to read these signals transforms your relationship and helps prevent problems.

Tail Signals

  • High, stiff wag: Arousal or potential aggression
  • Low, relaxed wag: Contentment and comfort
  • Tucked between legs: Fear, anxiety, or submission
  • Wagging to the right: Positive emotions
  • Wagging to the left: Negative emotions or unease

Ear Positions

Ears forward mean focused attention. Ears pinned flat indicate fear. Slightly back and relaxed signals a calm dog.

Body Posture

  1. Play bow: Front down, rear up an invitation to play
  2. Stiff, leaning forward: Confidence or challenge
  3. Lowered body, tucked tail: Fear or uncertainty

Pro tip: Always read the whole body, not just one signal.
