Reading Your Dog Body
Dogs constantly communicate through body language. Understanding these signals helps you respond appropriately and prevents misunderstandings.
Tail Signals
- High and stiff: Alert, possibly confrontational
- Low and relaxed: Content, comfortable
- Tucked between legs: Fearful or submissive
- Wagging right: Positive emotions
- Wagging left: Negative emotions or anxiety
Eye Contact
Direct sustained eye contact from an unfamiliar dog can be a challenge. Soft, averted gaze is friendly. Whale eye (showing whites) indicates stress.
Stress Signals
Yawning when not tired, lip licking, panting without exertion, pacing, and excessive shedding are subtle stress signals. Identify and remove the stressor.
