Dog Body Language: Reading Ears, Tail & Posture

Your Dog Never Stops Talking

Dogs communicate constantly through body language. Most owners miss the subtle signals until a behavior escalates. Learning to read these cues early prevents misunderstandings and strengthens your bond.

Tail Signals

  • High, stiff wag: Alert, possibly tense — not necessarily happy
  • Low, loose wag: Relaxed and friendly
  • Tucked between legs: Fear or submission
  • Wagging to the right: Positive emotions (research from the University of Trento)
  • Wagging to the left: Negative emotions or anxiety

Key insight: A wagging tail doesn't always mean a happy dog. Context matters — look at the whole body.

Ear Positions

Prick-Eared Breeds (German Shepherd, Husky)

  • Ears forward: Interested, focused
  • Ears flattened back: Fearful, submissive, or stressed
  • Ears rotated sideways: Uncertain, listening for more information

Floppy-Eared Breeds (Spaniels, Hounds)

Read the base of the ear rather than the tip. Forward-pulled ear base = engaged. Flattened ear base = stressed.

Body Posture

  • Play bow (front down, rear up): "Let's play!" — the universal canine invitation
  • Weight forward: Confident, approaching
  • Weight back: Uncertain, considering retreat
  • Rolling over: Can mean trust (exposing belly) OR stress (appeasement) — read the context
  • Lip licking or yawning: Calming signals — your dog is uncomfortable

The "Whale Eye"

When a dog shows the whites of their eyes (sclera) by turning their head away while keeping their eyes fixed on something, this is called whale eye. It signals discomfort and potential escalation. Give the dog space immediately.
