Stop Dog Jumping on Guests: Training Methods
Proven methods to stop dogs from jumping on guests. Turn-away technique, alternative behaviors, and when to get help.
Why Dogs Jump on People
Jumping is a natural greeting behavior. Dogs jump to reach faces and show affection. The problem is that this behavior, while well-intentioned, can be dangerous and disruptive.
The Turn-Away Method
- When your dog jumps, turn your back immediately
- Cross your arms and avoid eye contact
- Only engage when all four paws are on the floor
- Consistency from all family members is critical
Teaching an Alternative Behavior
Train a solid "sit" command and practice it at the door. Reward your dog for sitting when guests arrive. Over time, sitting becomes the default greeting behavior.
Managing Guest Arrivals
Ask guests to ignore your dog until settled. Keep a leash by the door to gently guide your dog to a mat. Practice with friends before real visitors arrive.
When to Seek Professional Help
If jumping persists after 4-6 weeks of consistent training, or if it involves scratching, barking, or anxiety, consult a certified dog trainer or veterinary behaviorist.
