Rock-Solid Recall: Come When Called Training
Start indoors with high-value treats, increase distance gradually, and never punish your dog for coming. A reliable recall saves lives.
Why Recall Is the Most Important Command
A reliable recall — your dog coming to you immediately when called — is arguably the single most important behavior you can teach. It's the difference between your dog safely returning from a chased squirrel and running into traffic. Unlike sit or stay, recall can literally save your dog's life.
Building Recall From Scratch
Start indoors with zero distractions. Say your dog's name followed by your recall cue ("Come!" or "Here!"), use an enthusiastic tone, and when they look at or move toward you, mark the behavior and deliver an extraordinary reward. We're talking real chicken, cheese, or hot dogs — not the kibble they get in their bowl. The reward must exceed the value of whatever distraction you're competing with.
Progressive Difficulty Ladder
- Stage 1: Indoors, 5 feet away, 100% success rate before advancing
- Stage 2: Indoors, across rooms, with mild distractions (TV playing)
- Stage 3: Outdoors on a 20-foot long line in a quiet area
- Stage 4: Outdoors with moderate distractions (other people present)
- Stage 5: Off-leash in a fenced area, then proofed in open spaces
Critical Recall Mistakes
Never call your dog to punish them. If you call them and then scold them for something they did, you've taught them that coming to you has negative consequences. Never repeat the cue — saying "come, come, COME" teaches your dog they can ignore the first several repetitions. And never stop rewarding recall, even when it's reliable. Intermittent high-value rewards maintain the behavior permanently.
