Why Recall Matters Most
A reliable recall is the single most important skill you can teach. It prevents your dog from running into traffic, approaching aggressive animals, or getting lost.
Step-by-Step Method
Step 1: Start indoors with zero distractions. Say your dog name and come in an enthusiastic voice. Reward generously. Step 2: Add distance and mild distractions. Step 3: Practice outdoors with a long line. Step 4: Add real-world distractions at the park.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Never call your dog to do something unpleasant
- Never repeat the command — say it once
- Never chase your dog if they run away
- Always reward, even if it took time
