Place Command: Teach Your Dog to Settle Calmly
The place command is the most useful thing you can teach your dog. Learn how to train your dog to go to a spot and stay calm on cue.
Why Place Is the Most Useful Command You Will Teach
Imagine this: the doorbell rings, you have guests arriving, you are on a work call, or you just need five minutes to eat dinner in peace. You say place and your dog goes to her bed, lies down, and stays there. This is not a fantasy, it is the place command, and it is the single most practical behaviour you can train.
What Is the Place Command?
Place tells your dog to go to a specific location (a bed, mat, or crate) and remain there until released. Unlike stay, which is location-independent, place is tied to a physical spot. This makes it more reliable in distracting environments.
Training the Place Command: Phase 1
Start with a raised dog bed or a specific mat. This is your dog's place.
- Toss a treat onto the mat. When your dog steps on it, mark yes and give another treat.
- Repeat 10-15 times until your dog goes to the mat voluntarily.
- Add the cue word place as she steps onto the mat.
- Gradually increase the distance you toss the treat from.
Phase 2: Adding Duration
- When your dog is on the mat, wait 1 second, mark, and treat.
- Increase to 2 seconds, then 5, then 10, then 30.
- Only treat when your dog is calm, lying down, not standing alert.
- If she gets up, calmly guide her back without making it a big deal.
Phase 3: Adding Distance and Distraction
- Send your dog to place from across the room.
- Walk around while she stays.
- Have someone walk past or drop a toy nearby.
- Practice with the TV on, the doorbell ringing, or visitors arriving.
The Release Word
Always release your dog from place with a consistent word like free or okay. This tells her the exercise is over. Never let her self-release, if she gets up without permission, guide her back and try again with a shorter duration.
Real-World Applications
- Guests at the door: Place keeps your dog calm while visitors enter
- Mealtime: Place prevents begging at the table
- Work from home: Place gives you focused work time
- Vet visits: Bring a travel mat and use place in the waiting room
Build up to 30-60 minutes of settled place time. Dogs naturally sleep 12-14 hours per day. You are just giving that rest a location.
