Loose-Leash Walking: Stop Pulling in 5 Steps

Why Dogs Pull on the Lead

Self-rewarding is the main cause. Every time your dog pulls forward and reaches a sniff spot, the pulling behaviour gets reinforced. They learn that pulling works.

Step 1: The Right Equipment

Ditch the retractable lead and collar. Use a fixed 1.8m lead and a front-clip harness. The front clip gently turns your dog toward you when they pull, removing the forward momentum reward.

Step 2: The Stop Method

When your dog pulls, stop walking completely. Do not yank or speak. Wait for them to look back or loosen the lead, then resume. They learn quickly: pulling = nothing happens, loose lead = we move forward.

Step 3: Reward the Position

Treat your dog when they walk beside you, not when they return from pulling. You want to reinforce the correct position proactively.

  • Carry high-value treats — boiled chicken or cheese beats dry biscuits
  • Start in low-distraction areas before trying busy streets
  • Be patient — expect 1-2 weeks of consistent practice
  • Never punish pulling — it creates frustration, not learning
