Puppy Socialisation Checklist: First 16 Weeks
The socialisation window closes fast. Use this week-by-week checklist to expose your puppy to the world safely.
Weeks 3-4: Sound Exposure
During weeks 3-4, puppies' hearing is fully developed. Play recordings of everyday sounds at low volume: vacuum cleaners, doorbells, traffic noise, thunderstorms, and children playing. Gradually increase the volume as long as the puppy remains relaxed. Never force exposure if the puppy shows fear.
Weeks 5-6: Surface and Texture Exploration
Introduce your puppy to different surfaces: grass, concrete, tile, carpet, gravel, and wooden floors. Create a "texture path" they can walk across. This prevents future surface aversions — many dogs refuse to walk on certain surfaces because they weren't exposed during this critical window.
Weeks 7-8: People and Handling
Your puppy should meet people of all ages, sizes, and appearances. Men with beards, children, people wearing hats or uniforms, people using walking aids. Each interaction should be positive — offer treats and gentle praise. Practice handling exercises: touching ears, paws, mouth, and tail.
Weeks 9-16: The Final Window
After the first vaccination series is complete (usually around 12 weeks), begin controlled outdoor experiences. Short walks in quiet areas, visits to pet-friendly stores, and supervised play with vaccinated, friendly adult dogs. The socialisation window starts closing around 16 weeks — make every experience count.
- Quality matters more than quantity — one positive experience beats ten negative ones
- Never force a fearful puppy into a situation
- Pair new experiences with treats and praise
- Keep a socialisation log to track what your puppy has experienced
