Puppy Crate Training: Weekly Schedule
Step-by-step puppy crate training schedule: from introduction to overnight success in 4 weeks.
Why Crate Training Works
Crate training taps into your puppy's natural den instinct. A properly sized crate becomes a safe haven, not a punishment.
Week 1: Introduction
- Leave crate door open with treats inside
- Feed meals near the crate, then inside
- Never force your puppy into the crate
- Goal: puppy enters voluntarily
Week 2-3: Building Duration
Close the door for 1-2 minutes while you're present. Gradually extend to 30 minutes. Step out of the room briefly. If your puppy whines, wait 2-3 minutes before responding to avoid reinforcing the behavior.
Week 4: Overnight Training
Place the crate near your bed initially. Set alarms for nighttime bathroom breaks every 3-4 hours. Puppies can hold their bladder for approximately their age in months plus one hour.
Common Mistakes
Using the crate as punishment, making it too large (encourages soiling in one corner), and rushing the timeline all lead to setbacks. Patience and consistency are essential for success.
