Puppy Crate Training: Complete Week-by-Week Plan That Works

Why Crate Training Matters

A properly crate-trained puppy views their crate as a safe den rather than a prison. This instinctive preference for enclosed spaces makes crates powerful tools for house training, preventing destructive behaviour, and giving your puppy a secure retreat during stressful situations.

Choosing the Right Crate

Select a crate large enough for your puppy to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Wire crates offer visibility and ventilation, while plastic crates provide more den-like security. Include a divider panel for growing puppies — excess space encourages elimination in one corner.

Week 1: Creating Positive Associations

Place the crate in a busy family area with the door open. Toss treats inside so your puppy enters voluntarily. Feed meals near the crate, gradually moving the bowl inside. Never use the crate as punishment during this phase.

Week 2: Introducing Door Closure

Once your puppy enters willingly, close the door for 30 seconds while offering treats through the bars. Gradually extend the duration. Practice stepping out of sight for brief periods, returning before your puppy becomes anxious.

Week 3: Extended Confinement

Begin leaving your puppy crated for longer periods — up to two hours during the day. Place a stuffed Kong or puzzle toy inside to keep them occupied. Build up overnight crating incrementally, starting with the crate beside your bed.

Week 4: Independence Building

Your puppy should now comfortably spend 4-6 hours crated during the day. Continue overnight crating. Begin practicing departures — pick up keys, open the door, leave for increasing durations. The crate becomes a positive space your dog chooses independently.

  • Never exceed 4 hours of crating for puppies under 6 months
  • Always provide a potty break immediately before and after crating
  • Ignore whining unless you suspect an emergency — responding rewards the behaviour
  • Keep crating schedules predictable to build confidence
