Road Tripping with Your Dog: 2026 Packing Guide

Hit the Road — Prepared

Road trips with dogs are rewarding but require planning. A stressed or uncomfortable dog can turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. Here's what to pack for a smooth journey.

Safety Essentials

  • Crash-tested car harness or travel crate — never let your dog roam free in a moving vehicle
  • Current vaccination records and a photo of your dog (in case of separation)
  • Microchip info: verify the chip is registered and your contact details are current
  • First aid kit: gauze, antiseptic wipes, tweezers (for ticks), Benadryl (confirm dosage with your vet)

Comfort Items

Familiar Smells

Pack your dog's regular blanket or bed. The familiar scent reduces anxiety in unfamiliar hotel rooms and campgrounds. A worn t-shirt with your scent works too.

Food and Water

  • Bring your dog's regular food — switching brands mid-trip causes digestive upset
  • Collapsible bowls for water breaks
  • Extra water from home if your dog has a sensitive stomach
  • Treats for rest-stop training ("settle" in the car)

Planning Stops

Stop every 2-3 hours for a 15-minute break. Let your dog stretch, sniff, and eliminate. Use apps like BringFido to find dog-friendly rest areas and restaurants along your route.

Hotel and Campground Tips

Always confirm pet policies in advance. Many "pet-friendly" hotels have weight limits or breed restrictions. At campgrounds, keep your dog leashed and never leave them unattended — unfamiliar environments increase escape risk.
