Moving House With a Dog: Stress-Free Guide
Dogs hate sudden changes. Plan the move, keep routines intact, and set up a safe room on arrival day.
Preparation Is Everything
Dogs are creatures of habit. Moving house disrupts every routine — smells, sounds, walking routes, and sleeping spots. The more you prepare, the smoother the transition.
Week Before the Move
Keep your dog's routine as normal as possible. Feed, walk, and play at the usual times. Start packing their items last — keep their bed, bowls, and toys accessible until moving day.
Moving Day Strategy
The chaos of boxes, strangers, and open doors is a dog's worst nightmare. The safest option: send your dog to a trusted friend, doggy daycare, or a quiet room with their bed and a white noise machine.
First Days in the New Home
Set up your dog's familiar items first — same bed, same bowls, same toys in the same arrangement. Walk the neighbourhood to find a good toilet spot. Keep visitors away for at least 3 days.
- Update your dog's microchip and ID tag with the new address immediately
- Walk the same routes as before if possible — familiarity helps
- Expect regression in house training — this is normal and temporary
- Give your dog a "safe room" they can retreat to when overwhelmed
