Dog Park Etiquette: 10 Rules Every Owner Should Know

Dog parks are wonderful for socialization and exercise, but they require responsible ownership. These rules ensure everyone has a positive experience.

Before You Go

Rule 1: Ensure your dog is fully vaccinated and on flea/tick prevention. Parks are germ hotspots.

Rule 2: Only bring dogs that are comfortable around other dogs. Reactive or fearful dogs should socialize in controlled settings first.

At the Park

Rule 3: Always pick up after your dog. This is non-negotiable.

Rule 4: Remove your dog's leash before entering the gate. Leashed dogs can feel trapped and become defensive.

Rule 5: Put away your phone. Distraction is the number one cause of dog park incidents. Watch your dog at all times.

Rule 6: Do not bring toys that trigger resource guarding. Balls and frisbees cause more fights than you might expect.

Rule 7: Intervene if play becomes one-sided bullying. One dog chasing another that is clearly trying to escape is not play.

Know When to Leave

Rule 8: Watch for stress signals: tucked tail, pinned ears, lip licking, whale eye. If you see these, it is time to go.

Rule 9: Leave before your dog is exhausted. Overtired dogs become irritable and more likely to snap.

Rule 10: Trust your instincts. If something feels off about the park dynamic, pack up and leave.
