Dog-Friendly Road Trips: Plan the Perfect Getaway
From route planning to pet-friendly hotels — everything you need for a stress-free road trip with your dog in 2026.
Why Road Trips with Dogs Are Worth It
There is nothing quite like watching your dog ears flap in the car window breeze. Road trips let you explore places together that you could never visit with a dog on a flight.
But a great dog-friendly road trip does not happen by accident. Here is how to plan one.
Choose the Right Destination
Not all pet-friendly places are created equal. A hotel that allows dogs might have a 15-pound weight limit. A beach might ban dogs during peak season.
Research tools: BringFido.com for pet-friendly hotels and restaurants, GoPetFriendly.com for trip planning with dog-friendly stops, and local council websites for leash laws and beach restrictions.
Car Safety
Loose dogs in cars are dangerous. Options include a crash-tested crate secured in the boot, a seatbelt harness tested to human child-safety standards, or a car barrier for SUVs.
Never let your dog ride with its head out the window for extended periods — debris can damage their eyes.
Packing List
- Food and treats (plan for an extra day)
- Collapsible water bowl and water bottle
- Medications and vaccination records
- First aid kit with vet emergency numbers for your route
- Waste bags (at least 2 per day)
- Bed or blanket with familiar scent
- Two leashes (one backup)
Plan Regular Stops
Stop every 2-3 hours for a 15-20 minute break. Let your dog stretch, drink, and relieve themselves. Service station pet relief areas are becoming more common.
Hotel Etiquette
- Never leave your dog alone in the room (many hotels forbid this)
- Bring a crate or cover furniture if your dog sheds
- Inform the front desk even if you booked a pet room
