Many popular houseplants are toxic to dogs. Lilies, pothos, and philodendron can cause anything from mild irritation to organ failure. But plenty of beautiful plants are completely safe for curious pups.
Safe Plant Picks
- Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum): Hardy, easy to grow, and completely non-toxic. Great for beginners.
- Boston Fern: Lush and pet-safe, though your dog might dig in the soil. Use mulch to deter this.
- African Violet: Colourful blooms and safe for pets. Prefers indirect light.
- Parlor Palm: A tropical look that won't harm your dog. Avoid "Sago Palm" which is highly toxic.
Plants to Avoid
Pothos, peace lily, snake plant, and aloe vera are all common houseplants that are dangerous for dogs. Even small nibbles can cause drooling, vomiting, and in severe cases, more serious symptoms.
Placement Tips
Even safe plants can cause stomach upset if your dog eats large amounts of soil or leaves. Place plants on shelves or in hanging planters if your dog is a serial chewer. Provide a dog grass pot as a safe alternative for nibbling.
