Daily Exercise Needs by Dog Breed and Size
Every dog needs exercise, but the amount and type vary dramatically by breed, age, and individual temperament. Understanding your dog's needs prevents behavioral problems and promotes health.
Low Energy (30 Minutes Daily)
Breeds like Bulldogs, Basset Hounds, and Shih Tzus are content with short walks and indoor play. Over-exercising brachycephalic breeds in hot weather can be dangerous.
Moderate Energy (1-2 Hours Daily)
Labradors, Beagles, and Cocker Spaniels need regular walks plus play sessions. Activities like fetch, swimming, and hiking keep them satisfied.
High Energy (2+ Hours Daily)
Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, and Siberian Huskies are working breeds that need substantial daily activity. Without adequate exercise, they develop destructive behaviors like digging, chewing, and excessive barking.
Age Adjustments
- Puppies — short, frequent sessions (5 minutes per month of age)
- Adults — full breed-appropriate exercise
- Seniors — reduce intensity but maintain consistency; joint-friendly activities like swimming
Signs of Under-Exercise
Weight gain, restlessness, destructive behavior, excessive barking, and attention-seeking are all signs your dog needs more physical activity. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys and training also counts toward their daily needs.
