Dog Body Language: 10 Signals You Are Missing

Your Dog Is Talking, Are You Listening?

Dogs do not have words, but they are never silent. Every movement of their body, every shift in posture, every flick of an ear carries meaning. Most owners catch the obvious signals, growling, tail wagging, play bows. But the subtle signals are where the real communication happens.

1. The Whale Eye

When your dog shows the whites of her eyes while keeping her head still, she is uncomfortable. This whale eye is a stress signal, your dog is monitoring a threat without turning her head.

2. Lip Licking (When No Food Is Present)

A quick tongue flick across the lips is a calming signal. Dogs do this when they feel uncertain or when trying to calm another dog or person. If your dog licks her lips during training, she may be stressed, not stubborn.

3. The Play Bow

Front legs down, rear end up, tail wagging, this is the universal dog invitation to play. But play bows can also appear during tension as a displacement signal.

4. Yawning

Not always tiredness. Dogs yawn when stressed, confused, or trying to diffuse tension. If your dog yawns at the vet or when you are arguing, she is saying I am uncomfortable.

5. Turning the Head Away

A dog who turns her head away from another dog or person is sending a polite back off signal. Respecting this signal prevents escalation.

6. The Velcro Shift

If your normally independent dog suddenly follows you everywhere, something has changed. It could be anxiety, illness, or a response to household stress.

7. Paw Lifting

A raised front paw can mean your dog is focused (hunting mode) or uncertain. Context matters: a raised paw with a stiff body means alert, with a relaxed body it means uncertainty.

8. The Yawn-Stretch Combo

When a dog yawns and stretches simultaneously after an interaction, she is processing stress and resetting.

9. Leaning Against You

This is not always about seeking attention. Dogs lean on trusted people when they feel uncertain, it is a request for support.

10. The Slow Blink

Just like in cats, a slow blink from a dog means trust. She is closing her eyes voluntarily in your presence. Blink back slowly to communicate the same feeling.
