Dog Allergies: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment
Is your dog constantly scratching? Learn to identify allergy symptoms, common triggers, and effective treatment options.
Understanding Allergies in Dogs
Allergies are one of the most common reasons dogs visit the veterinarian. Up to 10 percent of dogs worldwide suffer from some form of allergy. Unlike humans who often experience respiratory symptoms, dogs typically show allergic reactions through their skin and digestive system.
Common Symptoms
- Excessive scratching, licking, or chewing at skin
- Red, inflamed skin or hot spots
- Recurring ear infections
- Watery eyes and runny nose
- Gastrointestinal issues: vomiting, diarrhea
- Chronic paw licking or biting
Types of Allergies
Flea allergy dermatitis is the most common, just one flea bite can trigger a reaction in sensitive dogs. Environmental allergies include reactions to pollen, dust mites, and mold. Food allergies account for about 10 percent of all canine allergies.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the allergy type. Flea allergies require consistent flea prevention. Environmental allergies may be managed with antihistamines, immunotherapy, or newer medications. Food allergies are treated with elimination diets lasting 8-12 weeks.
When to See a Vet
Consult your veterinarian if your dog shows persistent itching, skin lesions, recurring ear infections, or any combination of symptoms lasting more than a few days.
