Puppy vs Adult Dog: Which Is Right for You?

The Puppy Experience

Puppies demand everything — constant supervision, house training, bite inhibition work, and socialisation during the critical 3-16 week window. But you get to shape their entire personality from scratch.

The Adult Dog Advantage

Adult dogs from resc are often already house trained, past the destructive chewing phase, and their personality is fully formed — what you see is what you get. Many are surrendered through no fault of their own.

Time Commitment Compared

Puppies need supervision almost every waking hour for the first 6 months. Adult dogs can handle 4-6 hours alone once settled. If you work full-time, an adult dog may be the more practical choice.

Cost Differences

Puppies require more vet visits (vaccinations, neutering) and destroy more items. Adult dogs typically need fewer vet visits but may have pre-existing conditions that need management.

  • Honest assessment: do you have 3-4 hours daily for a puppy?
  • Adult dogs often need 2-4 weeks to settle into a new home
  • Visit a rescue — you might bond with a dog you never expected
  • Both puppies and adults can be wonderful — it depends on your lifestyle
