First-Time Dog Owner: Your Essential Checklist
Everything you need before bringing a dog home — from supplies to vet prep to puppy-proofing your space.
Before You Bring Your Dog Home
Getting your first dog is exciting — and overwhelming. This checklist covers everything you need, so you are not scrambling at the pet store at 9pm on your first night.
Essential Supplies
- Food and water bowls: Stainless steel or ceramic. Avoid plastic — it harbours bacteria and can cause chin acne.
- Quality dog food: Ask the breeder or shelter what they have been feeding. Switch gradually over 7-10 days if you want to change brands.
- Collar and ID tag: With your phone number engraved. Get this on day one.
- Leash: A standard 6-foot leash. Retractable leashes are not ideal for training.
- Crate: Sized so your dog can stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
- Bed: Washable, sized to the crate.
- Chew toys: At least 3. Rotation keeps them interesting.
- Poop bags: Buy in bulk. You will use more than you think.
Puppy-Proof Your Home
Get down on your hands and knees and look at your home from dog-level:
- Electrical cords within reach? Cover or tuck them away.
- Small objects on the floor? Dogs eat anything.
- Toxic plants? Lilies, sago palm, and poinsettia are all dangerous.
- Chemicals and medications? Store them in high cabinets.
- Trash cans? Use ones with lids.
Vet Prep
Book your first vet appointment within 48 hours of bringing your dog home. Bring any health records from the breeder or shelter, a fresh stool sample, and a list of questions.
Set Up a Routine
Dogs thrive on predictability. Plan your first week with a consistent schedule: same feeding times every day, same potty breaks after meals and naps, and same bedtime.
The First Night
Expect disrupted sleep. Puppies especially will whine in the crate. Put the crate in your bedroom for the first week — the closeness helps them settle. A ticking clock or heartbeat toy can mimic the feeling of being with their littermates.
