Golden Retriever Guide: Temperament, Health & Care

America's Beloved Family Dog

Golden Retrievers consistently rank among the top 3 most popular breeds. Their combination of intelligence, gentleness, and eagerness to please makes them ideal family companions.

Temperament

Goldens are famously friendly — too friendly to be guard dogs. They thrive on human interaction and can develop separation anxiety if left alone too long. They're patient with children and typically get along with other pets.

Exercise Needs

As sporting dogs, Goldens need 60-90 minutes of daily exercise. Swimming, fetching, and hiking are ideal. Without adequate exercise, they become destructive and overweight.

Health Concerns

  • Hip dysplasia — screen parents before purchasing
  • Cancer — 60% of Goldens die from cancer (breed-specific risk)
  • Heart disease — subvalvular aortic stenosis

Grooming

Their double coat sheds year-round, with heavy seasonal blows. Brush 3-4 times weekly, bathe monthly, and check ears regularly for infections.
