French Bulldog Health Issues Every Owner Should Know
BOAS, spinal problems, and heat sensitivity top the list. Learn how to keep your Frenchie safe and comfortable.
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
French Bulldogs' flat faces are not just cosmetic — they are a health liability. BOAS affects the majority of Frenchies, causing narrowed nostrils, elongated soft palate, and restricted airways. Many struggle to breathe normally.
Heat Sensitivity
Frenchies cannot cool themselves efficiently through panting due to their shortened airways. In temperatures above 25°C, they are at risk of heatstroke. Never exercise a Frenchie during the hottest part of the day.
Spinal Issues
Hemivertebrae (malformed spinal vertebrae) are common in French Bulldogs due to selective breeding for the "screw tail." This can cause pain, weakness in the hind legs, and in severe cases, paralysis.
Skin and Allergy Problems
The deep facial folds trap moisture and bacteria, requiring daily cleaning to prevent infections. Frenchies are also prone to environmental allergies that cause itchy skin and recurrent ear infections.
- Choose a breeder who tests for BOAS — ask for grading scores
- Clean facial folds daily with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly
- Avoid stairs and jumping — protect the spine
- Pet insurance is strongly recommended — Frenchie vet bills are among the highest of any breed
